Stale Cupcakes
It was my birthday last week, but nobody even cared.
I threw a grand old party, and there wasn’t anyone there.
I invited my friends and family, and some coworkers too,
But nobody had shown up until the party was through.
A knock on the door- someone, perhaps, at last?
But my excitement crashed once I looked through the window glass.
The postman, with a few bills, and nothing more.
Taking all my decorations down felt like such a chore.
I sat at the table, in silence and alone,
Wondering what I had done- for what must I atone?
The days passed, and nothing was said,
And I’m starting to think I’m sick in the head.
But at the end of the day, the past can’t be changed,
It’s just me and my stale cupcakes, and it’s always the same.
Based off of the Animal Crossing song of the same name, 'Stale Cupcakes' forced me to do one of my least favorite gimmicks in poetry- rhyme schemes. Enjoy :)
