Wounds and Pieces
Like glass,
Our hearts need all of their broken pieces.
To be whole again,
And to be put back together once more.
Making it look as it was before,
Before it was broken,
And before the damage began.
But it won't ever look or feel the same way when put back together again.
All the broken pieces,
Scratched and tortured to look like scars.
Scars might not be visible from afar,
But you can’t escape their rough ridges when looking up close.
The heart will function the same,
As it did before.
Like it was not hurt at all,
And never crushed by someone’s touch before.
But deep down,
Isn’t it obvious that the heart is now numb?
That walls were raised to protect what was once shattered?
That the silence surrounding the ache buried deep was now killing them from the inside?
Then why do we continue,
Pretending and playing?
Acting out a role,
As if the hurt never happened?
It’s easier said to bury the baggage,
Then reveal the heartbreaks that were victims of trauma.
So, chin up and plaster on a smile,
Keep those broken pieces hidden as you carry them forward.
