I Wish
I wished at 7 years old,
Oh yes, I wished.
I wished so many things,
It wasn't a wish but rather a list.
I wished to be a mermaid,
A purple tail with yellowfins rushing out.
I wished to be a grand princess,
With clacky heels and flowing dresses.
I wished at 12 years old,
Oh yes, I wished.
Merely 5 years apart,
And still, I wished.
I wished to be as good as my siblings,
Diligent, smart, mature, benevolent.
I wished to be rich,
To be pretty, successful, confident.
I wished and I wished,
Still, it took me long enough to realize.
I wished and I learned,
Those options were never on the list.
I wished for it to not be true,
But it was, wishing would never get me anywhere, and that was true.
