Goreville
I am from dirt roads,
Where the dust rises as you drive
I am from musicals and sports
From Willy Wanka and the Christmas Carol
To basketball and softball
I am from southern cook-outs
With cheesy potatoes and brownie delight
At the old-town church
I lived in old-ranch houses
That have firm foundations outside,
crumbling on the inside
I’m known as Keith’s youngest daughter
From the well-known
And extraordinary
From you better behave or you get the belt
and “I’ll show you a knot in your tail”
I’m part of the Webb’s and Goreville
Where everyone knows my name
And what I do wrong
From the anger my father struggles with
The bathtub where my mother hides
The separations I didn’t see coming

This poem is about my childhood in a small southern town while dealing with the expectations of my family.
