I love having a dad,

But I hate that you get that title.

I love having a phone,

But I hate that we only talk twice a year.

I love when the holidays come around,

But I hate that you just send me a check.

I love when I can see you,

But I hate that you make me your babysitter.

I love my (half) brother and sister,

But I hate that they are replacements for me and my sister.

I love your stories,

But I wish you would ask about mine.

I love having a family,

But I hate that you keep me a secret.

I love the similarities we have,

But I hate how you don't even notice.

I love sharing the last name with you,

But I can't wait to get rid of it!

The author's comments:

I want to allow readers who are struggling to have a relationship with their father know that they are not alone. I want my audience to know that they aren't the only ones feeling the pain. Growing up and not having a father affected my life greatly. I express my feelings throughout my poem and try to make comparisons that others might relate to. This poem has a deeper meaning behind the word “dad,” and I feel that this poem made me realize something that I didn't know before and will leave my audience with a message as well.
