"Why is it that we rejoice at a birth and cry at a funeral? It is because we are not the ones involved."
-Mark Twain, "Pudd'nHead Wilson"

shuttering myself

was dustier than this old shtetl

cowardly nor cruel

to pull cloth over my collarbone

as you approached

rippled the crowd

with acrimony taken

at face value

my face a blare of otherness

against my intentions

all too aware of yours

doused in the entitled gait

of “should have known better”

the hat in the pogrom

blackened only by ash

and eyeless

accept no blame

for naivete

willful ignorance, different beast

should have been a different story

i don’t make the rules

my faces never have

that’s what you would know

if you could unbelieve the wicked truths

fabricated, deformed

facing fears of the unknown that

should have never been allowed in

forms so human

bones that never went awry

were born into it

like i was

four thousand years spent

accused of hypochondria

then chided

for my silence in every place

except the room that mattered

found myself stretched so thinly

you knew i’d always been transparent

took this and less for granted

even submission, you deemed it vitriolic

bared your own intentions vainly

trying to find a serpent’s heart in my own

with tradition i shuttered myself

and flinched your storm to ending
