An Ode to A Black Girl
Is applause to the better side of a race never seen
Expect for when the media makes them a victim
Not the female version of the ‘Angry Black Male’
Not the sassy best friend
But a person as deep and complex as any other
Though usually tried to be summarized in one word
Angry, Sassy, Loud, Opinionated, Rude
An Ode to a Black Girl
Isn’t liking chocolate and telling me about it
But hating the melanin within and the struggle it sings
IT IS listening to the words that I say
and where I stand
An Ode to a Black Girl
Is telling me what you think of me
Isn’t telling me what to do
Not asking you my hair is straight
Not asking why it’s natural
Not calling my locks or braids dirty
It’s loving my hair and the way I chose to wear it
Not how you want me to
An Ode to a Black Girl
Is loving them as a person
From kinky curls to box braids,
To flat chest and big breasts,
Curves or none,
Bigmouth or wild personality,
Soft-spoken or not,
Dark mahogany to skinny vanilla latte skin
We are all the same and so different at the same time
This is an Ode to a Black Girl
