The American Dream

Subjected into a waiting room my parents dropped me off at

The blank faces surrounding me look just as inattentive as I am

The lumps of cartilage in their throats sink every minute or so

Eyes fixating on the LCD screens we owe everything too

I’ll admit, I’m an addict as well

Everything I’ve ever worked for has led up to this moment

The opportunities

The stress

The boredom

All for this career

And yet, I feel no sense of gratification

My GPA was exquisite, and I’m proud

My resume is stacked, a sure bet

But I’m having regrets, waiting in the waiting room

All of this, for what?

A life of straight faces

A life where the loudest thing in the room is the sound of my own swallow

A life of stress with nothing but a screen to distract me

Is this interview the worst mistake of my life?

Or is this the American dream?
