Let me ask.

What is a crow to you?

Probably an abrasive, lurking entity

in the foreground of every dreary scene of a horror film.

But a bird is still a bird.

It can still fly. It is still beautiful.

Crows live their lives in the air.

They don’t realize what they’re doing is amazing.

It bothers me that no one recognizes that.

By no means do I see myself as a  abrasive, lurking entity.

Nor do I see myself as a ‘beautiful creature.’

But the connection lies within the idea

of  hidden beauty and potential something has

when you look past the stigma and reputation around the bird.

A crow has its wings and can fly

but isn’t appreciated

based on the idea that’s been cemented in the minds of our society

I too, can fly.

And I strongly believe once I’m seen as another

beautiful bird

among the sky with the rest of you,

my wings will no longer be clipped.

And I will no longer be held back by the things

that make me different.

But rather, be lifted by them.

Into the sky where I belong.

But until that day, the crow will stay alone, outcasted.

Left only with the hopes of one day being loved and accepted.

Not just to be invited, but expected to fly with the eagles.

So let me ask again.

What is a crow to you?

My names Alec and I'm a 17 year old from Missouri. This poem was inspiried by a good friend of mine who told me about the importance all birds have on her life. She saw them as the most free any being could be. Eventually, I found myself envying the carefree nature that birds have. They are truly beautiful.

I'm sure many teenagers like myself can relate to the wanting the acceptance of our peers. I've always felt as if I've had so much to offer to my school, my friends, and my community that I haven't gotten the oppurtunity to because I've always been different.

This is a very personal poem to me and I hope it may bring, even if it's just a little, comfort to someone who may read it.

Thank you for your time!
