Samuel:

You used to

run around

in your boxers

covered in mud.

You used to

bounce a

soccer ball

and throw it

at my balcony.

You used to

steal

pots and pans

with

leftover spinach

that you didn’t

want to eat

and pretend you were

a rock star.

You used to

swing your

shirt around,

revealing your

pale chest.

You used to

sit on the tree

by St. Peters street

and sing

I will always love you

with your brows

wrinkled together

when i walk by.

You used to

relax

around me and

talk about the people of

Provence, France.

Your people.

You used to

speak French.

So now

I speak French,

too.

This piece is a memory from my childhood crush about a boy that lived across from me in fifth grade. I remember him as if we are still friends today, but we haven't seen each other ever since we both moved away (at the end of fifth grade).

Very few can unwrap the struggles of life while being limited to a few words, and this poem certainly does adhere to. Each stanza is a paint drop, a thimble in a pillow, a star in a galaxy. When combined, they paint a beautifully crafted image for the audience's pleasure.
