Favorite Quote:
“Life can be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”

-Soren Kierkegaard

Yes, the one huddled behind

holiday greeting cards and

a dozen vacation magnets.

Look at my Grandma.

Do you see her curly hair

and borrowed sweatshirt

from my grandpa?

Arm hugging

his shoulder, Grandma

flashes a cheeky smile at the camera.

Now observe the backdrop.

Streams of sunlight cast shadows

on the sky-blue walls.

The cabinets, coffee machine, and cutting boards

beam in the background – still stuck

in the seventies. My

hand-drawn pictures litter the

front of the fridge.

Focus on my Grandpa now.

Notice his signature cup of coffee in

one hand with the other

draped over Grandma’s wrist.

He sports his typical farmer-boy flannel.

Raised with tractors not technology,

Grandpa gazes at the ground while

chuckling at the photographer.

Glance at my Grandma again.

Look closer.

Do you see the plaque

spreading through her brain,

preparing its next Alzheimer’s victim?

Yeah,

neither did I.
