Someone Said Once MAG
That people hear God in the mountains.
I don’t doubt it, but I’ve been hemmed in by
Hills that ripple and fold like green silk
All my life, and I’ve
Crawled to the tops of cliffs and felt
my heart stop
As I stared down into
The ripples and the folds stretching out
into the horizon.
And I’ve stood on those cliffs with my heart
Silent and my thoughts
Silent and my body
Unmoving and still,
No Great Loud Voice! to pierce the silence and make my stillness
Leap.
I don’t doubt that people hear God
in the mountains.
I don’t doubt the Great Voice.
But I’ve only ever heard a Small Whisper.
Those Great Things tell me the rest.
