Cocky but Generous
I don't like Cam Newton
He is too arrogant
He has too much spunk
That makes me not care of it
I gag at the punk
He got kicked out of Florida
That's a hard thing to do
My favorite school is Georgia
What's the better school to you
He stole a Dell laptop
And threw it out the window
Because he was caught by a cop
Then it was Auburn where he'd go
His knee hit the ground
On a game winning play
They ruled a touchdown
And Tigers won that day
On December ninth twenty ten
The Heisman trophy he did win
I told myself it was a scam
For I did not like the man named Cam
The Carolina Panthers first pick in the draft
Took the young QB
Age 22 and a half
For a quarterback is what they need
After a season of 2 and 14
The young man’s talent was sure to be seen
In 2016 the Super Bowl was near
With Cam Newton MVP that year
With every touchdown ball to a young fan
Helped me show some respect to that man
He visits children's hospitals of good will
And dances on the field with a kid that is ill
I could not doubt
The true Cam was out
Although he is a rival to my favorite team
He’s a beacon of generosity for all to see

I decided to write a poem about prejudice in sports. Disliking NFL player Cam Newton led me to write about my prejudice against him, but then how he changed my mind by being a generous person. In the poem, the first few lines say, “I do not like Cam Newton. He is arrogant and has too much spunk.” Since he was always a rival of my favorite team, such as the Florida Gators and Carolina Panthers, I sought reasons to dislike him. The laptop incident which got him kicked out of Florida was another reason to root against him. However, he would always give a touchdown ball to a kid in the stands, which at first I viewed as cocky, but recently noticed how happy he made the fans. The main thing that changed my perspective of him was his generosity. Donating so much money, and spending so much time at children's hospitals opened my eyes about how Cam Newton is not just an arrogant football player, but a kind hearted, generous man.
