The Season Opener
The sun burned our skin,
And I knew that it would be a long day
Because the soccer game was on that afternoon
And for the entire eighty minutes I had to play.
It was our very first game,
And although we prepared for it constantly
I still felt that we were unprepared
As the other team arrived at the field gallantly.
The coach gave us his speech
And we knew that a win would be nice
But as we stepped on the field and the ref started the game
The entire team was tired, burning in the sun, yet playing cold as ice.
Three-zero isn’t what we had in mind.
