Some Assembly Required
Babies come
With some assembly required.
They must be carefully built.
Without the right amount of glue
Or tape to keep the pieces together,
It’s easier to fall apart.
Maybe, a new baby comes,
And another after that.
There’s not enough glue to go around,
So the first sits without a sound,
Even when they fall apart.
A body that feels hollow
With the baby’s heart trapped inside
Stumbles with tears in the eyes,
And the baby writes about falling apart.
Is it broken or breaking?
Is it real or made-up pain?
Is she too young to fall apart?
Now, I can only feel whole when
Someone holds me while I fall apart.
Babies come, and they fall apart.
