I remember, where
A pond is there
Behind the clustering bushes
In our backyard.
I remember, how
The winter knocks
On its water and shuts it
With an icy guard.
I remember, when
With joy in her eyes
My little sister
Skated on the pond ice.
I remember, why
suddenly, laughing,
Broken shards led
Her smile astray,
In a splitting insatnt
The treacherous ice
Had given way.
I remember, who
Rushed first in aid,
as I stood on the edge
Disbelieving this unsettling picture,
It was, but of course, our mother.
