If I Don't Come Back
A boy of fourteen
enters the crowd,
Laughing with men,
A joyful light sound,
Then the shells fly,
Screaming through the air,
Right by his head
a bullet ruffles his hair,
They all reach for guns,
Metal hard and cold,
Men made to machines,
They do as they're told,
The boy does not cry,
Despite his young age,
Another death is expected
just like turning a page,
He hopes that it's his,
It seems almost holy,
To die on the field,
A small hometown glory.
