None Of Us Matter - Spoken Word
There are 7 billion 125 million people on the planet
And all of us have the audacity to think we matter.
Have you heard about the plane crash in Taiwan?
Leaving 19 dead and 40 traumatised
What about the 16-year-old girl that got kidnapped and rapped for a week by five men?
They left young girls terrified of walking down the streets again.
And what about that 12-year-old boy that committed suicide?
Bullied for years straight, but everyone only realised when it was too late.
Is this the world we live in?
Where we’d rather talk about Kylie Jenner’s lips
Than about the wars around us?
Is this what happens when media takes control?
Little girls dreaming to become a silicone Barbie doll.
I’ve seen kids in a bloody mess on the floor
Terrified of waking up the next day.
And what happens when everyone learns these things?
We won’t be spending hours in front of trash TV
Or texting rather than speaking.
But I guess it’s easier because I get to choose how you view me
I pick the prettiest words and select the nicest light,
But you wouldn’t appreciate it if you heard the constant voices
Screaming in my head at night.
Is this how we’re meant to be?
Faking smiles like there isn’t a war in our heads?
Why would anyone want a person sad?
No one wants the sad poet writing in the night.
No one wants the lonely artist drawing furiously in their book.
No one wants the paranoid photographer looking over pictures with shaky hands.
There are 7 billion 125 million people on the planet
And most of us still have the audacity to think we matter.
I’ve seen students sitting down in class with tired eyes
Nervous about the presentation they have to give.
What happened to learning?
It’s just about passing now.
They don’t care if we’re dead inside
Just that we turn our assignments in on time.
People don’t need to know what happened in the 18th century.
We don’t need to know about the world wars.
We have battles in our minds every night.
The only connection we have is with other lost kids
Trying to find their way out of hell
I haven’t met a student who isn’t sleep deprived.
A student who’s able to say, “I’m fine” and mean it.
Most of the people that go out on weekends
Are avoiding something at home
Whether it’s homework or their family.
Either way they’re drinking illegal substances
To try to chase their lives away.
You ever met a kid who hasn’t thought about death?
We’re all too busy with assignments to know anyway.
There are 7 billion 125 million people on the planet
And I still have the goddamn audacity to think I matter.
I know it’s a lie but I prefer it to the alternative
Of not thinking about the wars around me.
I don’t think about the people outside of my circle of care,
I have too many assignments to do.
I want to help, I want to try,
But I can’t,
None of us can,
And that’s why we think we matter.
