Family
Grandmother says,
“If you don't eat, you die!”
And we laugh.
What a beautiful excuse
to cook, a simple motive
to gather and feast.
A conveniently vital reason
for family,
for tradition,
for huddling round the table
on Christmas Day,
smiling at the faces
not seen often enough,
and breathing in deeply
the smell of hot turkey
and thick lasagna,
sitting together,
laughing, singing, eating-
or else we would die!
