Contentment
The remains of make-up
dripped down my face as I picked up my pace
hoping impress a stranger in a black Civic speeding down my street.
Ankles aching,
head hounding,
I refused to surrender to the weariness crawling up my legs.
The gamboge light of the sun,
pouring through the branches of the trees,
illuminated each verdant leaf.
Mozart’s Summer Overture: Requiem for a Dream
immersed my body with a melodic melody.
The passionate choir,
the teasing violins,
and the deep, pulsing bass
could churn any heart.
I was happy.
No, not happy.
Ironically content.
