Sweet Summer
Free at last!
to roam the earth, to explore,
to discover, to wonder, to imagine
We became wild creatures
but it was all right
because it only happened once a year
Two and a half months of perfection,
and not a second could be wasted
but still there was not enough time
Somehow it seemed there were
only twenty-three hours a day,
only six days a week
We didn’t mind the heat much;
we just put on our sunglasses
and rubbed on our SPF 30
Ice cream melted in our hands
and dribbled down our chins
giving us sweet, sticky smiles
In the woods we found pink flowers
and wore them in our hair
or gave them to our mothers
We ran barefoot over the hills,
chasing our long shadows
across the freshly cut grass
Cool breezes blew at night
and birds and crickets called out
under the black sky
The moon shone down upon us
as we lay on the grass counting stars
and thinking of tomorrow
