What the Moon Sees
The moon has seen the Garden of Eden,
and watched as Jesus wept.
It listened to the crickets sing,
as the prince of Egypt slept.
It shone down on blistered men
when the great black plague hit.
And saw so many people die,
by the yellow fever fit.
It helped to guide the runaways.
Shone down on them and gave,
a way to see deep in the night,
and leave life as a slave.
It glowed for men night after night,
as brother fought with brother.
To separate from the “Civil” land,
and not be part of another.
It saw the reflection of itself
in water touched by ice.
As the unsinkable ship sank,
and boats had to suffice
It watched Jews under Hitler’s hand
killed and starved to death
in camps not meant for living things,
so hard to take a breath.
It shone on bullets flying through mud
as people raised the score
of more men dead on the enemies side,
during the Second World War.
It watched as horses changed to cars,
and Wright brothers change the world.
Apollo 11 land on it,
space travel finally unfurled.
It was hid by light the day we cried
for those in towers high
hit down by planes on 9/11,
while ash smoke filled the sky.
Now it sees men dressed in dirt
on land that isn’t theirs.
Fighting for the good of men
wondering if anyone cares.
What more must the moon endure?
How much more will it see?
For now it’s taking visitors,
and watching over me.
