nightfall
the sun kisses the clouds
illuminating the earth
I can’t take it anymore
I shield my eyes, I hide my face
from the sun’s fierce embrace
I wait for night to fall
but every time I look
the sun only seems brighter
“go away,” I tell her
but the sun just smiles
the cold and the darkness
they’re an inevitable part of life
the sun, so warm and vibrant, tricks us
into thinking everything will be alright
it won’t
the ball of light disappears into the horizon
“good night, my child,” she says
“you have much to learn”
I laugh at her foolishness, but could it be?
the shadows of night lead to first light
