Somber Surrender
Pristine in black and white,
no one ever knew
the sadness in her eyes
or how her sorrow grew.
Strands of shining hair
stream ’cross her dampened face,
clinging desperately
to hide what can’t erase.
Her smile subtle lounges,
vague sass restrained in hips,
inevitable anguish hinting
at the corners of her lips.
Cherry-blossomed cheeks
have long since faded grey.
The spark once in her eyes,
resigns and dies away.
Alone she is left at sunset,
innocence scarred by his wrath.
But out to the world she is nothing,
simply trapped in an old photograph.
