Searching the City
The dumpster drips as a shadowed figure emerges
Searching the illuminated city streets for a sign of enlightenment
Hands in his pockets, the figure paces down the wet sidewalk.
Raindrops on windowpanes accuse him.
Curtains close him out of any home.
Garbage bags rustle, gossiping about his past.
The street he’s walked a thousand times before has yet to befriend him.
A lone taxi pities him after plowing through a puddle
The water droplets lunge for his coat
Dragging him down
Until he is lost in the city he knows.
