"I'm Not Pretty Sure"
“OH! Look at that gorgeous hair!”
Those scary ladies would say.
“Is that your natural color sweetie?”
I scowled. This seemed to happen every day.
I just replied, “I’m not pretty sure.”
The ladies laughed at what I said,
To them it made no sense.
But to me, it was as clear as could be.
Should’ve I taken offense?
I just thought, “I’m not pretty sure.”
With most questions I seemed to do this,
Although I’m not pretty sure why.
People asked me too many things,
Waiting for my reply,
Which usually was “I’m not pretty sure.”
One day, I believe it was my mom,
Who confronted me about my silly phrase.
What had I meant by it
Throughout all these child hood days?
As I sat there and pondered,
I got a puzzled look in my eye.
I raced through my head,
To give her a reply.
I looked straight at her,
To say with a shrug,
“You know I’m not pretty sure mom.”
And for the rest of the day, it did bug.
I thought about what I meant to say.
What my saying could mean.
But no matter what I tried to think,
The answer was never so clean.
Looking back at it now,
Whoever would have thought?
Such a silly phrase like that,
Could leave a child so distraught.
I really haven’t ever figured out,
What that phrase meant.
It makes no sense when you say it aloud,
Why would a child pick such a thing to invent?
Children come up with so many things,
We all seem to never understand.
How I wish I was a child again sometimes,
Today’s world is so bland.
So thinking about it again,
Why can’t we all just make up a silly phrase?
To boggle people’s minds,
And make them think for days.
The answer to that question,
I must begin to say,
I’m not pretty sure why we can’t,
If we did, the world wouldn’t be so gray.
In today’s world,
I still seem to be not pretty sure about a lot
For if I were sure,
I wouldn’t be like a child, pondering and distraught.
Everyone has to answer questions.
Everyone has to make choices.
Sometimes we don’t know what to decide,
Or how to spread our voices.
People may ask you for advice,
In fact I guarantee they will.
And instead of saying I don’t know,
Their expectations you can fulfill
By saying, “I’m not pretty sure.”
