Double-Edged Sword
Naïve and a fool I used to be
a poor victim of love’s charm
blinded, utterly unable to see
realizing too late the extent of its harm
I was only one of countless prey
for love’s beauty is an intoxication
so alluring it cannot be kept at bay
filling the senses with ineffably delightful sensation
With an irresistibly sweet melody
the music of passion draws victims in headfirst
once immersed there is no remedy
thus a seraphic blessing turns into a fatal curse
What seems so benevolent before
now turns on me with the force of a thousand angry seas
casting me into the depths of vulnerability with no oars
dashing me against the rocks of pain like a relentless beast
Only now do I feel the sting of its ruthless dagger
piercing me so deeply that I can hardly breath
Head reeling, I can only stagger
slowly feeling my icy heart seize
Such is the fate
of all who fall out of love with love
the innocuous pulchritude will never again sate
those forced by heartbreak to become tough
Naïve and a fool I used to be
but now I defer to the ultimate lord
a lord who taught me to heed
that it, love, will always be a double-edged sword
