With lines from “What Makes Nurses Vulnerable to Burnout and How It Impacts the Care They Provide” by Stephanie Sy and Gabriel Roy, a Pulitzer Center reporting project.

“Nearly 18 percent

of newly

 licensed registered nurses

quit the profession

 Within

 The

 first year.”

Nearly half of our nurses feel the strain,

The weight of their duties takes a toll on their brain.

In every hospital, clinic, or ward—

Their dedication tested, resilience scored.

“ But all that passion,

along with obligations back at home

 And

 a lack of administrative support,

can take a heavy emotional toll.”

A 50/50 chance, it seems, for each soul

To bear the burden, to shoulder the toll.

It could be me, or the girl by my side

In this noble profession where emotions collide.

“I was experiencing extreme levels of stress and anxiety,

went on maternity leave.

And, during that time,

 I was like,

I don't know if I want to go back.”

Yet amidst the execution, the stress, and the strain

Their commitment unwavering, their resolve won't wane.

For healing the sick, bringing comfort and care.

They'll continue to stand through every despair.

“The more depressed and burnt out you are,

the more preventable medical errors that are made.

So not only is it unhealthy for our population,

but it adversely impacts health care quality and patient safety.”

So lets lend them support, show them we care-

For those healthcare heroes, they are always there.

In their battles unseen, may they find some reprieve,

For their well being matters, as much as those they revive.

“Taking care of nurses so they can take care of us.”
