Grateful Giving
If ever you should feel weak,
And find all your prospects bleak,
If ever you should complain,
About a seemingly agonising pain,
If ever all should appear imperfect,
Pause for a split-second, and then reflect,
That are you not, even in your worst predicaments,
Much better off than those who reside on pavements,
Or those who with rare ardour and zeal,
Recieve, in a day, hardly one square meal,
Or those who are truly stricken with grief,
Whose tears are too many to be held by any handkerchief?
-Look at them and breathe a sigh of relief.
Because in comparison with these, your life is indeed beautiful,
So thank your lucky stars and be earnestly grateful,
For the breath in your chest, the beats of your heart,
And for everything great you have in your part,
For the many things for which others have striven,
But you, in your fortune, have already been given,
For the blessings of the Lord above,
For your friends and kindred's love,
For all the talents and skills you possess,
Essentially all you have, because it isn't at all less.
You have been given, what by far exceeds,
Every single one of your needs.
So why not take a bit and give,
To those who in its scarcity live,
See how the letting go of an old dress, book, or toy
Shall bring to your heart an immeasurable joy.
See how your beneficiary's grateful smile,
Shall bring to your heart true satisfaction after a long while.
Therefore never, ever hesitate to give,
And for everything around you, with eternal gratitude live.

I wrote this for a school assembly on the themes "Gratitude" and "Joy of Giving". Thought I might as well publish it here.
