The caged Elephant reaches his trunk out,

Reaching for his past wildlife and family he can't forget,

He hopes he won't forever go without.

All he can do is hope and shout,

Trying to avoid the voices of happy human families,

The caged Elephant reaches his trunk out..

But the Elephant grasps something new,

He feels a hand but it's not the warmth he hoped for,

He hopes he won't forever go without...

Everyday he finds a way to go throughout,

Reaching for the trunks from his loved ones he never forgets,

Everyday the caged Elephant reaches his trunk out....

He tries to avoid the feeling of doubt,

Hoping the bars separating him from his family will break,

He hopes he won't forever go without.....

Someday the Elephant hopes he will reroute,

Back with his family living the wildlife unconfined,

Until then the caged Elephant reaches his trunk out,

Forever hoping he won't forever go without......

I was inspired to make this poem from three different things, two of which are poems. The first poem is called, "Do not go gentle into that good night" (by Dylan Thomas). This poem is one of the best Villanelles ever made arguably the best one ever made which helped me get the idea to write a poem in a Villanelle rhyme scheme. The second poem that I was inspired by was a poem called, "Caged Bird" (by Maya Angelou). This Poem is a beautiful poem talking about a caged bird but instead I decided to take a different approach. I talked about an Elephant which has a different type of mindset and feelings than just a bird wanting to fly. The last thing that inspired me was an actual Elephant from a Zoo I went to a long time ago, this Elephant was separated from the rest of his family. I love Elephants for their cuteness, their intelligence, and their warm hearts. So I decided to make a poem about a caged Elephant in a zoo.
