I have a habit of staying too close.

That when I’m gone for a moment the stench of me still lingers on your skin.

Like bookmarked pages, you come back for more…

Even if you don't want to.

You can’t escape my charisma.

When I play in your top ten saddest songs you let me drive.

Through moonlight rides and when the tears on your dash match the constellation in the sky.

I drive…

So when morning comes you can forget.

Forget ME as if I was not there every trauma-filled night.

Bottling it up.

Like the caffeinated drug you so eagerly consume each morning to suppress me.

HEY, Let's play on the next number-one best hit, just die.

…no?... maybe next time…

When you're ready for your next fix.

It won't be long before you tick.

As you drink more, and more, and more.

Brunch, lunch, and moments of solitude.

You drink to elude me.

I’m never gone.

You see…

People will chase me.

Ametures will admire me.

I…well you get the idea.

No one can get rid of me.

I am the hangover they can never shake.

After depression pills, and forceful thrill rides.

Killjoy!

That's me.

But their Fools…they're all fools.

To think they can forget me.

Wish what I do upon me.

I’m sorry honey life's unfair.

And it's time you accept I'm a part of you.

‘But you make me experience the worst parts of me…’

I know…I take away your distractions and make you face reality.

Make you see all your mistakes.

Make you feel me over alcohol-induced comas and Marajana highs.

I am the cause of your lowest times.

And when you cry.

Alone.

But I’m here.

Always…

The author's comments:

This is a Persona poem which is a poem written in the first person perspective about someone other than the poet(sitting and speaking in the character or object's shoes). I chose pain and wrote in first person as if pain itself were speaking if it had a voice.
