"A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor" - Franklin D Roosevelt

                                                            Where is a place,

                                                         Which you call home

                                                  Where you can safely embrace

                                                             Every unknown

America brings you closer.                                                                                   India reflects

To the pleasures of the modern world                          The struggle of empire, queens, and kings

Where everyone is the composer,                                                       Where everyone protects

Of every action and effect, they deserve                                     A culture and its golden wings

From eventful cities to lively sports                                              From food to music and dance

There is something for everyone to enjoy                                            What is there not to love?

Something that can truly enforce                              In a place where every moment is a chance

All of the chances America deploys                                                  To discover something loved

From the Super Bowl to the Oscars                             From the Taj Mahal to the Statue of Unity

To the apple pie and the fourth of July                                  To festivals, yoga, cricket, and food

To the historical figures found on the US dollar,             Everything plays a role in the community

Celebrations and food are something one cannot deny            Which anyone can faithfully pursue

In the land of opportunity                                                Either bright cities or peaceful villages

We live a life of fantasies and wonders                                                  No matter where we live

But in this community,                                                                            Every day is an image

We live in a land of the struggle of different cultures            Of where the rise of a country begins

                                                                On this earth

I am proud to call two places home

Where I am free to unearth

A culture of my very own

The author's comments:

Coming from a family of 100% Indian heritage and simultaneously being a first-born generation America, I constantly juggle between the two unique yet diverse cultures and traditions. At home, I am exposed to India's traditions, cultures, and languages. At school or in public, I witness the lifestyle and culture of America. In this unique situation where Asian culture meets Western culture, I love seeing where the lines blur or are drawn sharply.

This poem shows the differences and similarities between the two nations and how I have come to call both places home despite the countries being separated by miles of water and land. As a proud Asian American, I embrace both the place of my birth and heritage and never seize to take every advantage to learn all about the history and culture of both places.
