Shades of Gray
No one likes the color gray,
For it hides in shade and shadow.
No one likes the color gray–
Other colors fill the hours.
Red for fire, dripping blood;
Blue for sky and turning sea;
Purple berries stain the summer;
Green grass blades and tumbling leaves;
Swirling pink clouds of cotton fluff;
Yellow sun shines from the flowers;
Oranges leak into the sunset–
Colors yielding subtle power.
But no one likes the color gray,
Creeping like a breeze to hair;
Standing steady in a stone;
Growling with a wolfish stare.
No one likes the color gray
Chasing Sun with it’s twilight;
Rumbling with the thunder heads;
Mixing White with Black’s dark might.
Yes, no one likes the color gray,
Dancing lonely in the air.
No one likes the color gray
And the mystery found there.
But I do like the color gray,
And the wisdom of lonely hairs;
The proud, tall statues Nature built;
The moon’s companion, firm and fair.
I do like the color gray,
And Day’s last light before the night;
The life of rain from watchful clouds;
The shade that separates the rights.
Yes, I do like the color gray–
I’ll join its dance--we’ll be a pair.
I do like the color gray,
And all the shades in hiding there.
