Eve
Eve
I wish I could have been Eve,
Unspoiled by the impurities of a world yet to be told,
And unaware of the spells that were soon to be cast.
I wish I could have been an ancient Egyptian
With black eye makeup twisted around my pupils
And wrists that squeezed inside of heavy gold bracelets.
I wish I could have been a Capulet
And I could wonder, ‘what’s in a name?’
While tangled between the sheets of a zealous love affair.
I wish I could have been the inspiration for a Renaissance painting
Or the subject of an Impressionist’s
So I could gaze at Monet as a brush tip-toed across his forever cryptic canvas.
I wish I could have been a flapper
Grinning playfully in a smoke filled room,
And moving my feet swiftly along to the band’s horn section.
I wish I could have been a child of the 60s
At ease with the world around me
And riding the wave of a changing America.
I wish I could have been Eve,
Unspoiled by the impurities of a world yet to be told,
And unaware of the spells that were soon to be cast.
