Sixteen and sleepless nights go hand in hand.
Euphoric months of youthful vertigo,
An era full of everything unplanned.
Old tickets to an indie alt-rock band,
Popcorn spilled at midnight's greatest show,
Sixteen and sleepless nights go hand in hand.
First kisses, break-ups, laughter bright and grand,
Scratched bumpers from a test drive in the snow,
An era full of everything unplanned.
Rifling through notebooks fully crammed,
Breakdowns before sunrise starts to glow,
Sixteen and sleepless nights go hand in hand.
Poisoned by mistakes and high demands,
Heartbreak. Failure. Why can't I just let go
this era full of everything unplanned?
Pillows soaked with tears - oh, I can't stand
the hopeless thought of waking tomorrow.
Sixteen and sleepless nights go hand in hand.
An era full of everything unplanned.

A villanelle contrasting the expectations and realities of being sixteen in iambic pentameter. Sixteen seems to be romanticized as the epitome of teenage spirit - the one year where you can taste freedom without responsibility, bright colors and parties, all-nighters and trips to the mall and hanging with your friends. I'm not sixteen yet, but I can at least hope to have a good time when I get there.
