I Don't Like Chance Meetings

I met a girl as I opened a door.

She said her name was Fate.

I thought perhaps I had seen her before

But I can’t recall when or where anymore

I asked why she was out so late.

She said that she had to be here at this time

She waited under this birch tree

So that her path could be met with mine.

And perhaps my future would then align.

But that didn’t make much sense to me.

She promised that she would return again

When the daffodils bloom and the sun is high.

She said that I’d understand by then

Once the pressure turns me from coal to a gem

And I said “Okay, bye.”

Many years later I opened a door

And saw her again, in the day.

She was so glad to see me once more.

She told me my future had so much in store.

And I turned and walked away.
