"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference." -Elie Wiesel

She has been lingering ever since day one,
The part of you tradition tells you to shun.

you let her out in the darkness of your peace,
where she may not be judged by people's eyepiece.

Her skin is softer than a Saint's prayer shawl,
yet God cursed it on the day of the install.

She was born with you as an unwanted twin,
with gorgeous colors of an unforgivable sin.

you hide her beauty from people's screech,
with minds as old as the books they preach.

How ignorant you are to block the rainbow;
you must let it out to enlighten and glow.

She and you stand as one. Happy and proud,
dancing in the face of the scornful crowd.

Their dark, rotten opinions don't even matter.
Hence, your shining mirror won't ever shatter.

She and you are who you exactly used to be.
Just a little more colorful. That's who you will Unapologetically be.

The author's comments:

This poem is for everyone. It is for people who have to deny themselves and hide their true identity just because of the ludicrous and obsolete standards of society and religion. I used the pronoun "she" to refer to that beautiful and admirable part of their identity that they are told to be ashamed of because I wanted to personify it, and gender is not what I am focusing on here. I hope that my poem helps everyone feel more confident about themselves.
As cliché as this may sound, we all must be accepting of who we are and embrace it. This is something that can be very difficult for teenagers or even adults, but we need to practice it and try not to be judgmental of others as well. Let the cavemen bigots, who know nothing but labeling and ranting at people who are not like them, do whatever they want. Being yourself proudly and showing your gorgeous, genuine colors is more powerful and brighter than the darkness of their thoughts and opinions.
