Have you noticed that dystopian literature has been becoming more popular. One reason is that it allows readers to escape a known reality and let their imagination run free. Dystopian literature is interesting because they contain a climax that leaves you on the edge of your seat and wanting to read more to find out what happens. Here are some reasons dystopian literature is interesting to read.

First off it can allow readers to escape known reality of life and enjoy a book. “They were burdened with sashweights and bags of birdshot and their faces were masked”. This quote from Harrison Bergeron shows that the government forces everyone to be equal so no one could be better than another. “Every twenty seconds or so the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like george from taking unfair advantage of their brains”. This shows how the government doesn’t want any single person to be better. In this case george has a better thinking ability so the government issues him something to slow that process down

Another part of dystopian literature is showing how the world’s not perfect. “No, i said, nodding toward the speaker panel on the dashboard”. The quote from ten with a flag shows that the world is so corrupt that the government has to listen in to know and predict what the citizens are going to do. “If we use the option to terminate the pregnancy what would happen to us. Why would you do that sir”. The background on this quote from ten with a flag is that the government doesn’t care. When this family was having a baby that was rated a ten but had a flag the government gave them an option to keep it because it was great, or terminate the pregnancy. What was in the fine print was that if they chose the termination, whoever made the decision would have been deranked. This shows that the government ignores their freedom of choice and the outcome of either choice is similar.

Nobody’s perfect everyone gets a little curious or rebellious.“The flag is an option not a right, arrest him.” Here the higher ups manipulated the father so that he would end up making the decision to terminate the pregnancy and cause him to lose his marriage and become deranked. “She fired twice, and the emperor and the empress were dead before they hit the floor.” This goes back to harrison bergeron. Harrison wanted to show everyone how truly beautiful and smart people can be without all the government restraints. After his couple minutes of glory the government stepped in and enforced the cruel law.

Dystopian literature is growing in popularity because of the “keep you on your toes” storyline. Dystopian literature is a type of literature that is increasing in popularity and wanting to keep readers interested in the storyline. In such cases these short stories show what the future may become with the government always hungry for more control. Literature like this is also important because it keeps our eyes open to possible things that could happen in the future if we aren’t careful.
