Cathedral Window
The “Cathedral Window” by Gail Katz-James is unique. There are seven different doors, not one like another. They are made from colored washers, beads, wire , tubed steel, and old belts of various sizes . Every door has a very intricate pattern that decorate the doors like sequins on a dress.
Many different interpretations come to mind as I look at this particular piece of art. One interpretation comes from my religious beliefs. Every washers is a different size, color, and in a different location. They are big and small, and they are blue, green, purple, black, or any other color you can think of. Each one is beautiful in its own individual way, contributing to the whole piece. These observations correlated with my understanding that God made each and every one of us different and that we are all an important part of his masterpiece, the world, no matter our size, color, or where we live.
A second interpretation is along the same lines as my first one as it continues with the idea of individuality. Everyone has a personal touch, a unique personality, or a prefered style that can play a role in what defines them or how people remember them by. This is where I think the details of the “Cathedral Window” come into play again. The beads are all in a different location on the different colored washers. It again can represent some of the differences in our world, such as, culture, ethnicity, religion, race, political views, or appearance. All the washers and beads are together as one showing that we can come together no matter the race or where we originate and it creates something wonderful.
My third observation relates to support. Every washer is depending on the wire to hold it up. Support from one another is a must. If washer were to fall off the wire they would all fall with it. We can not walk through our lives alone and expect it to be beautiful and all we want it to be. We don’t just need each other; God is our desideratum.
Another way to look at the “Cathedral Window” is that the seven doors represent different paths we can take through life. Some are good, some are bad. Those that are truly good are often narrow, but those that are worldly are often wide and worn. The path that we choose to follow is in our hands. Parents are there to guide you. They lead you around the traps and mud puddle along the way. Let this be a lesson to you that parents are right, more often than not, and therefore should be listened to.
The path you choose sets the tone for your life. It all begins in high school as seniors decide what they are going to do after graduation. They are deciding on a path, planning their future. They may pick a path that could lead them to great success or a path that could lead them to have a very unhappy life. I am doing everything in my will to be on the path for success. I am passing all my classes with flying colors and am more than on track to graduate. I am also in the top quarter of my class.
I was drawn to the “Cathedral Window” because it’s many details set it apart from all the others. I am able to relate to its brilliant creativity. I like to be creative and make things that are different and stand out from all the others. There is no other piece of art that is the same as this one and not a single pair of eyes that views it the same as another. There are many different meanings and ways people could interpret this piece. Some may see this as a skyline as if you were standing in downtown Chicago. Others may look at it and get a look on their face as if they had just bit into a sour grape because they don’t like the color combination. This piece of art done by Gail Katz-James is one most won't forget. It is full of color and creativity and there are many things to see when looking at the “Cathedral Window,”but every pair of eyes sees it from different perspective and every mind formulates a different interpretation.
