Most Painful Thing
The most painful thing i have ever done in my life was a simple mistake that could've been avoided had i just used my head instead of getting in a hurry. It was a nice cool fall afternoon so i decided to call up the boys and see what everyone was doing. It had been a while since we had done anything. Well a few phone calls later I decided that i would light a big bonfire behind my house. I called everyone back and told them to be at my house around dark, it will be a great time. We figured out who was bringing what and who was riding with who and had it all planned out.
Well my dad had been clearing trees out behind our house because he was building a pond so I figured that would be better to burn then going to find wood. There were cedar trees in there and your regular ol oak trees so i knew it was gonna burn pretty good and last awhile. I went and told my dad i was gonna light the brush pile and he was ok with it. He told me to run to the shop and there was an old blue gascan i could use to light it with. So i went to the shop and snagged that up and a BBQ lighter and headed back to the brush pile. This is where everything went south.
I hurried to the brush pile carrying that gas can and lighter and was super excited for that night, maybe a little too excited, so excited i wasn't really paying attention. I took that blue gas can and went to soaking as much of this brush that i could. I used the whole 5 gallons on this brush pile. Now, here is where i should of been thinking. When my dad told me to get the can, he didn't tell me it was gasoline, I bent down with that BBQ lighter and as soon as i clicked that button, my whole world lit up. The sound of the fire surrounding my body was unreal. It was like everything was very quiet, but yet it was loud at them same time. Everytime I see fire of any kind that's the first thing that comes through my mind. I can still remember it like it was yesterday.
The flame swallowed me and the gas can i was holding in my hand also exploded. At first i didn't think it was too bad because of all of the adrenalin i had running through my body at the time. The adrenalin made everything better and i wish it wouldn't of went away. I could feel that my eyelashes were fused together from the flame and that my hat was halfway melted to my hair. I was so furious about my dumb decision that i grabbed my hat and flung it and said a few words.
My family just happened to be outside when all of this happened and they all came rushing over. At this point i could tell i was pretty bad off and was in excruciating pain. I walked to the house after i told everyone i was fine and got in the shower and turned it as cold as the shower would go. I yelled at my mom while i was in the shower and told her to call the hospital as ask them what i should do about a burn. They eventually talked me into coming into the hospital so they could look at it. I went in the hospital and by this point the only thing that made the burn feel better was air so i hung my arm and face out of the window all the way to town. When we got there they gave me some shots for the pain but they didn't help much at all. I stayed there for a few hours after talking to burn specialist and several different doctors, they gave me some medicine and a whole list of instructions for taking care of a burn.
Well the fire was canceled that night although that brush pile did burn good. I ended up with 2nd degree burn all up my right arm and the right side of my neck and face. So, if you are going to light a brush pile, don't use gasoline.
