His freakishly long purple neck made me quiver. He had three fronds on the top of his head, four legs, and four arms. This lizard-like monster had the ability to camouflage like a chameleon. He had that evil smile that would immediately make me want to turn off my TV and go under multiple sheets and blankets. He was a deceitful, hot-tempered savage who had no feelings for others. His name was Randall Boggs, the main antagonist of Disney’s Monsters, Inc.

I was about 6 years old when I first watched Monsters, Inc. I was unable to watch it without my parents because I would be terrified and have nightmares. The lights in my family room were off and I was eating Tostitos on the couch with mild salsa. I really enjoyed the movie, until that weird, purple, freaky, ugly, vile lizard was introduced. The movie included a handful of weird looking monsters, but there was something in particular about Randall Boggs. He was unique from all the other monsters, but in a bad way. He naturally possessed the nature of evilness and had the desire to inflict any kind of pain or problems. I do not think Randall did one single thing that was nice because he is that much of a savage. Randall’s plan in the movie was to capture children to hear them scream, which is very freaky. I strongly believe that this would make any six-year-old child extremely intimidated. There was nothing delightful about him because he simply was the definition of being a wicked individual. The main reason why he made me so scared as a kid was his physical characteristics. Whoever designed the character of Randall did a very successful job because he truly looks repulsive. The slimy way he walked, the disturbing voice of his, and the ways he hurt my favorite character, Mike, were all factors. In many movies, like Monster Inc, the antagonist usually gets everything they want and successfully executes all their evil plans until the end. Given that Monsters, Inc. is a movie intended for young children, even I, at 6 years of age, knew that Randall would get everything he wanted. It would get to the point where I knew he was going to do something bad so I would point at Randall and complain aloud, telling him that what he was doing was cruel. Randall Boggs was a freak of nature to me and scared me to death.

I could not put myself to sleep that night after watching Monsters, Inc. His evil grin would not get out of my head and made me keep thinking about him. He chilled my spine and made me feel uneasy. I remember my mom always telling me, “Kevin, he is just a fictional character. He can not do anything to you because he is not real.” Although my mom’s sweet talk was a bit convincing, it definitely did not stop me from being scared of him. I constantly told myself to not think about him and try to think about something completely random, but that only made me think about the sadistic Randall Boggs even more. The face you make when you taste something horrible is an accurate portrayal of my face whenever I heard, or saw Randall. Although Randall was a huge contributor in making me frightened, the movie in general caused fear. For the next few days after watching the movie, I kept a small lamp on in my room because I was afraid that a monster would come out. To this day, I wonder what I would do if I encountered the infamous Randall Boggs.
