Failure

My pets, Oliver and Fluffy were these cute little white bunnies with weird spots all over their bodies. They were definitely plump and fat but they looked super healthy. Every two days or so my sister and I would take them out of their cage and bring them outside and sit in the green, pokey grass while we forced my parents to get all the food and clean all of their waste.

The first week of July was very hot, the sun blazed fiercely and we knew it was way too hot to bring the bunnies outside. On Monday, I woke up, brushed my hair, got ready, and went to our cousins house. “Honey, it’s time to go!” “Okay mom coming!!” We got there and we all climbed out of the car, grabbed our things and ran to the door. Sweat dripped down our faces because of how fast we ran to the door. “Heyyyy, Kevin! Hey Anne! How’re you guys?” “We’re great! Do you guys want to come outside and play some soccer with us?” “Yeah sure!” My sister and I said in unision. We hung out with our cousins all day till about 8, and then we went home. I totally forgot about the bunnies, and we just told my mom that we would feed them tomorrow and that they probably had enough food from the day before. “Girls, don’t forget that you have to feed the bunnies tomorrow!” “Yes Mom!” The next day we woke up and went to go check on the bunnies and give them food, but when we walked in the bunnies weren’t moving. They were flat and they reeked of death. The brown spots that were on their bodies were a lighter color and they looked hurt. Ashley, my sister, started crying first and I cried too. We felt like we failed because we weren’t able to keep the bunnies alive and it had only been two weeks since we got them. We also felt like we failed our parents because they paid for them. “Mom we’re so sorry! The bunnies died and we didn’t mean for it to happen! We should’ve went and fed them!” “It’s okay girls, next time you girls need to be more responsible and you girls can always ask your dad or I to help! Don’t feel too bad about it!”

We still felt so bad and felt like our parents wouldn’t ever trust us again with pets. Besides the feeling of disappointment, we wanted to honor the bunnies. So we dug holes in the back of the yard and let our dad help us place them inside. My sister and I drew pictures of us and the bunnies and taped the pictures onto sticks that were then placed on top of their spots. I always tell myself that the next time we get pets I will be more responsible but sometimes I miss the bunnies.

I was inspired to write this piece because it was a moment I felt failure and I felt so bad for the bunnies. I hope people can somehow learn from my experience and take control of their responsibilities.
