First time I went into a mine
“WOW! This is so awesome, we should so do this again!” as I was running with excitement. “This is the most interesting trip I have been on with you guys”. What else can we do while we are around here in Copper Harbor? I had said to my parents.
My family and I had taken a week in the summer to go to the Upper Peninsula and it was in the middle of July. We stayed at campgrounds around where we would be going so it didn’t make the day trips longer than 1 ½ hour. One of the campground was Hog Island. It was so cool to stay at a campground that I was dying to stay at and here I was camping there with my whole family .It was a cute campground with the water in the background. My Mom, Dad, Matt, Brendan, Grandparents, and me had taken day trips up to awesome landmarks like Copper Harbor, Presque Isle, watching big boats come into the harbor and they were big freighter boats carrying cargo, and other thing like that and it was terrific.
One of the day trips we took was going to Copper Harbor up at the peak of the Upper Peninsula. When we were up there we had looked at the stores and one of them was full of things with copper in it and good smelling candles. My mom had bought me a new ornament made out of real copper and it has the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and it is so cool. There were some cool looking bridges that were there. My mom had looked for cool things to do in Upper Peninsula. One was to go to see what a mine had looked liked. The mine was called Delaware Mine. It was just amazing to look at what once was a huge deal in 1847 to 1887 as a copper project and then now a tour attraction. When my mom walked into the shop to pay for 5 people I had seen a skunk. The mine owners had them as pets. The owners of the mine shop had us go and get our coats out of our truck because he said “it will get cold like almost 40 degrees and I had said “burrr.” Before you go in the mine you have to watch a a little movie about mines to learn about what you will be seeing when you get in there. It also told you what the history was behind the mine we went into. After the movie the owner had us put hard hats on to protect our heads just in case of an emergency. The hard hats were different sizes and they were yellow. Just as were we ready to go in the mine my mom said ¨let's go and it will be cold so do you have a warm enough coat.¨ Right away there were some steep, wet stairs with water dripping from the top of the mine. We carefully tiptoed down the steps. The walls were full of rocks and the mine the mine floor was very uneven that lead to the bottom of the mine. You could walk around and see all of the tools that were left behind there at that time when the mine was being worked on. The owners put lights along the wall or we would have been in the dark. There was another family that were there doing exactly what we were doing and taking pictures. They had signs placed here and there to tell you about what was happening in that area and they had shown some of the workers in the pictures and they were wearing the same yellow hard hat that I was wearing and had on blue jean overalls for work clothes. We had walked in the other way all of a sudden was a big hole in the ground it was so cool and water was coming out of it. My family and I walked further into the mine then we finally had reached the end after like 45 minutes being in the mine. This was the first mine tunnel. There were others but it was full of water. It was so cool you could see so far down to the mine and there was still more to see down there. There was a railing so no one fell over the side of it. We had started to walk back and we had seen things that we did not see the first time. There was a hole in the wall with leaking water and my dad was like ¨get over here I would like to take a picture of you guys in the mine¨ he said with excitement. ¨This is the first mine your have ever been in before so let's have it for memory.” My dad had just finished up and we walked until we reached the stairs again and my mom had to be dragged up to the top because she was so tired of walking and the stairs were too steep. As I dashed up the stairs I was full of excitement. Once we got back into the shop we had found the skunk come to greet us and the owner had said “if your would like your can pick the skunk up and hold it.” It was so cool. Then the owners told me that they had to get rid of the smelly gas that the skunks produced so that they could legally own it as a pet.
My family and I had so much fun and all I wanted to do was do was scream as loud as I could because, the mine was so cool and being the first mine my family has ever been in. It was the most fun I had ever had on this trip because I was able to do something fun with my family and actually liking it. What I had learned was that the mine was being worked on in 1847 to 1887. At one time the Upper Peninsula had a lot of copper mines all over. This was a big job for men looking for work.
