Our Beginning
A beautiful girl and a shy guy. As large of a space as it might seem, there was nothing to separate them but a few apartments. The two of them had lived in the same town for nearly all of their lives.
When they were younger, they both lived in the same apartment complex, but they didn’t know each other. It wouldn’t be until years later that they would meet, but even then, they had only known of each other; they never really spoke. But this was about to change.
They were both in the wedding party, so they were going to walk down the aisle together. When he’d first heard about it, he didn’t think anything of it. Neither did she for that matter. The only thing she could think about was how she was going to look in her dress. This would be just another night for both of them. Little did he know, the wedding reception would be one of the best nights he’d ever experience.
It was the rehearsal for the wedding, and for the first time, the two of them had an actual conversation. The first words out of his mouth weren’t even a greeting, but rather “What’s up?” Casually enough, she responded to him with the ever so overused phrase of “Not much.” It wasn’t much, but for once and actual conversation rather than just existing next to each other.
Once the rehearsal had finished, he went with her and her family back to their house for dinner. Spending the rest of the day there, the two of them and her brother, began a Nerf war that lasted for hours; they clicked. She gradually began to casually flirt with him; a subtle but purposeful nudge here, obvious leaning into him there. So, of course, he did the same.
The day, though, eventually turned to night. As much fun as they were having, it was time to get some rest, as the wedding was happening the next day. Back at the hotel she seemed to be all that he could think about. Normally he wouldn’t even give a person the time of day, let alone obsess over the thought of one. But he loved it.
He didn’t see her until they got to the place of the wedding. But now, there she was. The first thought that went through his head was how beautiful she looked. He couldn’t stop thinking about it, but he didn’t dare tell her. What if it made her think he was awkward?
The wedding went on, and it was time for the pictures. They were all memorable for him, but the one that comes to his mind is the superhero picture where she stood behind him and held his buttoned shirt open, revealing the superhero-themed shirt underneath. He’d think of how adorable she looked every time. So would she.
Now, it was time for the reception. She was hyped up, and he was too. He couldn’t help but think of how incredibly cute she was and how incredibly beautiful she looked. She couldn’t help but think of ways to get him to dance with her. He wanted to ask her if she would dance with him, but he was too shy to even dance on his own.
The reception began, and after all of the formal dances and the dinner had finished, the real dancing begun. He didn’t dance. In fact, he’d gotten through most of his life without having to do such a thing. But there was something about her. She made it easy for him to be himself around, for him to talk, for him to feel comfortable. This was different for him. He wasn’t used to it, but he liked it. They danced to every song, including the slow ones. Never before had he slow danced with anybody.
She kept constantly thinking about how to ask him to homecoming. It’s only been a few days, but she found herself interested in him. Even during every dance they had together, all she could do was stare at him, trying to figure out a way to ask him. Eventually, she decided to just rip it off like a Band-Aid and ask him. And that’s exactly what she did. She was so nervous that she didn’t hear him say yes.
As the night came to an end, the two of them enjoyed one last song together. This was the night that a new world opened to him. That a new world opened to her. A beautiful girl and a shy guy. It was more than just his world. More than just her world; it was their world.
