A Hike
Breathless we stood atop the hill we climbed. The view captivated us. Everything seemed so distant. The houses in the valley looked like toys a young child would use for their dolls. The wind kissed our skin. I always felt disconnected from society when I looked down on the cities below.
“It all looks so tiny” my friend said.
“It really makes you think about how small the world actually is…how small we actually are,” I said.
We began our descent. Our feet slowly stepped downwards, back to reality. The scenery disappeared behind trees and neighboring hills as we worked our way back. I looked up at where we were standing. The lone tree upon the hill swayed in the breeze, almost as if it was waving goodbye.

This piece was inspired by weekly hikes I used to go on with my friend. There was one hill we always began our hikes with that had a single tree at the top. Hiking was something that always brought me down to earth despite physically elevating me.
