Overcoming the Biggest Obstacle
“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it.” Said by Helen Keller . It was 2005 on a Monday morning. The sun was shining and I was about to pee my pants. The time had come, they said come on in but I did not want to be in too deep. I had a fear of drowning in a swimming pool. Much like Helen Keller overcame her obstacle of not being able to communicate, I too would overcome my obstacle of the fear of drowning in a swimming pool.
Helen Keller overcame not being able to communicate. She learned how to use sign language, and now she is able to communicate. At the age of around 2, Helen became blind and deaf from a sickness she had. At first her parents did not know what to do, until they sent a letter to a doctor, who sent Annie Sullivan, to be Helen’s teacher. Helen had to learn many things with Annie Sullivan. First she had to learn to trust Annie, then she had to learn how to obey and last but not least Hellen had to learn how to communicate to Annie. Just like Helen I would have to learn a few things before I could overcome my obstacle.
I had to overcome my obstacle just like Helen had to. I had to learn how to swim once and for all. So my mom took me to the swimming pool on a monday morning in the sunny month of July. My mom went to the back, she called for Larissa, and told her today was the day. At five years old I, Stephanie Sturm, would overcome my fear of drowning. I finally did it, I learned how to swim. And now because of Larissa I swim competitively on our swim team in Olney.
Helen’s obstacle and mine are very alike in different ways. Helen and I both were very young when we overcame our obstacle. Helen at the age of around nine and me around the age of five. We also could not do it without the help of our amazing teachers. Helen had Annie and I had Larissa Last but not least, we both became successful because of us overcoming our obstacles.
Helen and I both overcame mighty obstacles. I learned from Helen’s obstacle that if you believe, anything is possible. As long as you keep your head up, then you can achieve your goal, that is what I learned from my obstacle. If you are stuck and you do not know what to do, all you have to remember is “Just Keep Swimming.”
