The Incident
It was all so sudden, I remember like it was yesterday. It was a saturday, the night before I had slept in a friend’s house and my dad had picked us up on Saturday morning because we had a “TEC fuerzas basicas” game which is a elite soccer team that you need to pass a lot of tryouts to be able to be accepted on the team. I remember being so excited because it was the very first game of the season. When we got to the field sweat was already dripping from my forehead and I already had a bad sunburn. Then I realized something wrong was going on I had gone to the locker room which smelled like dirty socks. The locker rooms were all dirty and were full of dust on each locker and on the ground, it was so dirty I think I even saw a rat in a hole on the wall I changed into my uniform and when I got out my dad and the car were not there. I checked my bag and grabbed my phone, I saw a message from my dad saying “I had to leave Flora’s house (my aunt) because there was a family emergency and I need to be there to support my sister, I will tell someone to come and picj you up after the game.” He could not have told me at a worst time, now I was all curious about what happened, I needed to know! but it was no time for that I had to concentrate in the game. During warm-ups all I could think about was what could have happened that was so important. The field was a little bit wet and the mud was getting stuck on my cleats, while I stretched I was getting all muddy and the sun was burning my face as if I were in a frying pan. This thoughts started to come to my head saying what if someone is hurt, what if something really bad happened to my brother or my sister. Sadly my coach saw that I was a distracted like a “fly heading towards the light” he said during warm-ups and benched me for the first half. Normally I would have payed attention to the game and cheered on my team but I didn’t all I could think about was the “family emergency” all throughout the first half of the game I day dreamed. When the second half started I did not even remember what position I was playing in, the coach never stopped shouting at me telling me to focus on the game and told me I was playing like a newborn baby. The game seemed like an eternity I just wanted the game to end so I could talk to my dad or anybody that knew what was happening. Finally the referee blew the whistle, I was so eager that I did not do the good game handshake that you are supposed to do every single day I just ran as fast as I could to the parking lot and started to look for any family member then, I saw my sister Nicole. Nicole is normally always in a hurry and in a bad mood, she has blonde hair and blue eyes. She always has knitting sticks on her hand and she always looked like she came back from a workout because she is always in clothes that you would use for when you go to the gym. But this time she was dressed like she came back from a formal event. She was in a good mood which made made be more suspicious than before because she normally is in a bad mood when she sees me and does not stop shouting at me to hurry up. This for me was what was the hardest part not knowing what was going on because my sister was treating me like a king which she had never done before and did not seem like her so it made me think that she was trying to hide something from me. I ran to the car as if I was being chased by the bulls in Spain. I started to yell out questions like what happened!? Did someone get hurt!? my sister never responded, I thought she was giving me the silent treatment until she said where do you want to eat? then she added on anywhere we will go. I said Burger Station off the top of my head and as she said we went for lunch there. When I got to the restaurant the first thing I smelled was bacon, I remember smelling the frying bacon would put me in a good mood, and the posters that were hanged in all of the walls would make me laugh because of the silly pictures and quotes.Everything was so awkward my sister barely talked to me and she looked nervous. Finally my sister said something that I will never forget
“Delfin was in a car crash today, and he has sadly past away”
“You're kidding right”
“Sadly no, Delfin was driving very fast by the Rio Santa Catarina and crashed very badly”
“Nicole promise me that what you are telling me is not a lie to mess with me.”
“Alex I wish I were”
“Show me proof” I said whatever I could come up with to convince myself that what she was telling me was a lie but I knew that she was telling the truth.
“ Alex don't make this harder than it should be” she responded quietly almost as she was trying to whisper“Showing you a picture will only make things sadder for both of us.”
I did not respond, I was too busy talking to myself saying “Its a joke, its a joke”
I had so many emotions and so many questions that my head started to weigh more than usual. Tears started to flow from my eyes down to my cheeks faster than when I saw Marley and me for the first time I just could not believe that someone I was so close to had just passed away. Delfin was never in a bad mood always smiling telling people how to make their lives more successful. He loved saying quotes to people and playing with the little kids in the family. He had grey hair and brown eyes, he was a bit overweight but always went to the gym. One thing that I must missed about him is that every Sunday we would have a family gathering when he entered the house he would always start singing the same song every single Sunday “cafe”. Now I started to think about all the good times we had like when he took me to my very first concert and how he acted as if he really liked the songs even though I knew he didn’t, how he would always make me laugh when I was crying since I was a little kid. Finally I remembered when I went to sleep over to his house with my cousins and how he would always entertain us by showing us scary movies and how he was always loyal and honest and especially caring it all felt so real in my head, it was like he was still with me, but he wasn’t no matter how hard I tried to convince myself that he was still with us he wasn't. My sister couldn’t help but ask what was on my mind but I was too sad to answer. I could not bare knowing that he was not alive anymore. He was one of my favorite uncles and a role model to me. Time past and now whenever I see a photo of him I smile because I remember that no matter where I am he is still with me.
