Outside my window I saw frozen lakes and snow covered trees. A vast expanse of snow covered the landscape, and it was impossible to see 10 feet in front of the car. I felt like I was residing in a world of only white, white, and more white. I felt overjoyed to finally see the snow for the first time in my entire life. We drove on the highway for hours but excitement kept me from sleeping. My sister, four years old at the time, slept in the back seat. The temperature started to get colder outside and I shivered. I kept on asking my parents what the name of the city we continued to drive through for hours. in and how much longer till we get there. I opened my window and my fluffy hair that covered my whole head stood up. My mom kept saying in a tired voice, “we’ll be there in an hour”.

I could see the trees getting taller and covered with snow. I felt too tired to even be excited about snow. My sister woke up when she caught the sight of snow and started getting really happy. My dad wore only a black t-shirt and I couldn’t believe how he could survive the cold. We stopped at a gas station to get our snow chains. The workers slowly started putting the chains on and by the time they were done the sun fell behind the mountains. The roads started to get snowy and the bodies of water looked like they froze. It got really dark and my windows kept on getting foggy. We were on the freeway and I felt so excited to be almost there. We drove in the middle of the freeway when suddenly a loud crack startled us all. The sound screeched so loud that my sister started crying and I had to cover my ears. I asked my mom what the sound was, but she didn’t know. It lasted for minutes until my dad couldn’t take it anymore. My dad and my mom were discussing things in the front seat that I couldn’t quite hear over the loud noise. My dad started slowing down and he pulled over at the side of the freeway. I getting worried. My dad bent down to check the wheels. He said that the chains were broken. My dad made some phone calls. We were stuck in that spot for almost an hour. He decided to drive very slowly to the next gas station. We made it to the gas station where I felt a little safe. My dad made two more phone calls. what seemed like forever a car pulled over in front of us. It appeared to be my uncle’s car. He walked up to us and my dad told him what happened. After a few minutes later a tow truck pulled up behind us. A big guy walked out and he seemed to be covered in grease. He walked up to the side of our car. He took the snow chains off our tires. He said a few things to my dad and gave him a piece of paper. My dad payed him. I still didn’t know what happened so far. I just stayed in the car entertaining my sister. Since the car turned off my sister and I were freezing. The tow truck driver drove away. My dad got in the car and said that we should be okay as long as we drive slowly. It took about another hour to finally get to the hotel and in that hour. I felt very agitated. When we got there I felt the coldest I ever felt in my life. My dad walked down the lit parking lot with only a short sleeve shirt. My mom had what looked like ten layers on. I became exhausted, but it ended up to be all worth it.
