“Hey Decs! I’m back, so I hope you’re ready for din-”

“…”

“Declan?”

Meanwhile.

The voyage to the convenience store is arduous, and bitter. But he must press on, in order to find his father, lost in the expansive sea of Montlake. Crossing two streets, he finally arrives at the air conditioned paradiso. But this was the simple part - now his true quest begins.

Meanwhile.

“Declan?! DECLAN?! ohgodohgodohgod IF YOU’RE HOME COME OUT! DECLAN!!”

Meanwhile.

The deserted aisles betrayed no sign of his father’s presence, nor any interrogation of the solitary clerk. But he held out hope. There was no doubt in his mind that his father was near, and the boy would find him.

Meanwhile.

“...check the corner store and the Hop, he‘s probably looking for me. Okay. Thank you.”

Meanwhile.

He perceived a wailing noise, characteristic of a constable. Nothing of it; surely some criminal was on the run. But were the noises approaching? Was his father the victim of a crime? The culprit? What in the

“Are you Declan?”

…yes?

“Get in the car, kid.”


The author's comments:

All of this actually happened. Although I'm making guesses on what my dad was exactly saying, since I of course was not there myself and only heard about it after the fact, and (not surprisingly) I've embellished my inner monologue quite a bit simply because that's what it felt like. Don't worry, the cops were only there to pick me up and drop me back at the house.
