Prevention
Remember when you were younger, and you used to put your arms in your short-sleeved shirt and used to say that you had no arms. Or how you used to sleep with all of your teddy bears so that they wouldn’t feel lonely. Remember when we were kids and looked at the rain droplets on our car windows, and used to imagine that they were racing? Or when we would have tiny tantrums over the most trivial things. Remember how when we were younger, we would remain eager to grow up. What were we thinking?
When we were younger, we enjoyed our childhood with innocence and support from our parents. I was the same way, I had the urge for growing up, little did I know that there’s a lot of unpleasant events that have taken place in our world. You start understanding how pain and separation feels like. You start seeing awful news, “women gets killed”, “ Segregation”, “ Teen Pregnancy rates go up”, “Actor comes out to be Gay, and is physically attacked.” Amazing isn’t it, we didn’t know the majority of the things that were stored in the world.
Now, I have the feeling of sadness when walking down the street. I see the groups people hang out with. I see bullying, I see tears, and mostly I see the rates of suicide. Imagine having a best friend, who supported you through thick and thin, texting you at 2 Am to say, “I can’t sleep, whenever I shut my eyes, I see the most horrid scenes.” You showing care, respond with “what’s wrong?” Then they say that they can’t respond. You feel a sense of nervousness and fear for his life. Honestly, I’ve never dealt with people who are in severe depression, I didn’t know a lot about suicide but now I was learning. He was only 15, a year younger than me. Acting like an older sister, I asked him to give me his Dad’s phone number. He wouldn’t allow me to ever contact his parents, and I never forced him to so I just simply responded with “Ok”
He stopped talking to me for a month, even after continuously texting his phone to see if he was better. I get a message from him, a suicidal note… It was on the lines of, “Listen, I care about you highly… I love you best friend but I have to Go. It’s my time to.” After that message, I had tears forming in my eyes. I kept calling him, telling him not to leave me, telling him that if only he knew how much grief and pain I was feeling. My heart skipped a beat or two, I started sweating, and felt warm as if I was going to faint in any minute. “Oh God”, I screamed. I didn’t know what to do, I kept calling him, but it was too late. He was gone, and I got to know months later on. “It’s my fault”, I thought while shutting my room door. I should’ve known the steps of dealing with someone who is going through depression.
Few Months after the death of my best friend, I started surfing the internet for suicidal prevention websites. There were numerous websites, and hotlines to contact if someone is going through such a stage.
This has formed this inspiration to start creating my own website. Which is mainly focused on people who go through depression, or have friends that are suffering. This will better help them take decisions. I strongly go by the saying, “ Each one Teach one.” We can spread the tips and help more people. I understand that the world is horrible, but we need to get through it, and with the hardships; comes an award that you find in the end. We all should know more about suicide, and how to end it, lets take action now!
